Growing up I never knew exactly what I wanted to do when I was an adult. The only thing I knew inside my soul was that I loved working with people, and I loved planning things, no matter how big or small. I refused to settle for a job that I didn't love. Life is too short for that. It wasn't until I started working at Reverie Events in 2013 that I knew with my whole heart that I loved event planning. I was hooked from the very first wedding we did on Labor Day weekend. I fell in love with the crazy, the flowers, the set up, meeting new people, the entire process. Let me tell you, it is not a glamorous job. It's nothing like Jennifer Lopez in "The Wedding Planner". It's a lot of work. You have to be able to juggle tasks, keep everything running smoothly and under wraps, handle crises with a smile on your face and be able to deal with everything that comes your way. There are some fun parts, especially when you work with great people (like my boss and my team-mates at Reverie).
People who are new in the Events business like I am have a hard time figuring out where to get started. It took me a year and asking my boss how I can improve myself before I found a few great places to continue to better educate myself for the event planning industry.
1. The Fashion Institute of New York, They have a professional studies classes, you can take photography and classes on event planning, publicity, etc. My first class is next week!
2. Love n' Fresh Flowers. I went to a workshop last year and had SO much fun! You meet people in the business and make some new friends. Jennie grows her own flowers and does many beautiful arrangements for weddings. Website.
3. Bliss and Bespoke. A wedding planner's retreat happening in Charleston in February. Words cannot express how excited I am for this! Professionals from all across the country are speaking at it. Website.
Pinterest is a great website to search for ideas and for crafts to do. Go to the library and take out books on tablescapes, floral design and event planning and find magazines like "The Knot" to read to gain knowledge of the industry.
Loving what you do, no matter if it's paperwork or spending 10 hours putting flowers together until 3AM the day before a wedding is the best thing you can do. If you love your job, you never have to work a day in your life. Some of the best planners learn from trial and error, they love what they do.
I'm excited for the work adventures that 2014 will bring!
